OAK LAWN SOPHOMORES WIN VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCE TITLE
The Oak Lawn Community High School sophomore girls volleyball ended the season just a little over the .500 mark at 12-10 overall. However, the Spartans made the most of their victories and finished the year with six consecutive wins. Five of those six wins came against South Suburban Conference Red opponents, and the streak helped them earn a conference championship.
This was a great team to be a part of, and I truly enjoyed coaching them, sophomore coach Brad Skendzel said. To win conference my first year coaching at Oak Lawn with a team like this is unforgettable. The girls always came to practice day in and day out wanting to play and learn the game of volleyball, especially with the girls going above and beyond, staying after practices to perfect their skills and techniques. I cant think of a better or more deserving team to win a conference championship.
The sophomores received great performances from Selin Calbay, Gina Baldea, Katelyn Mendez, Katie Gulino, Becca Kampic and Jackie Conrad. Calbay led the team in kills, Baldea and Mendez led in blocks, Gulino led in digs, and Kampic and Conrad were the two setters. The rest of the sophomore team included Shannon Wiltzius, Maureen Hughes, Kim Ruane, Mimi Musa, Sam Rogers, Donia Baya and Jamie Cronin as well as freshmen Jessica Cosenza and Olivia Lindner.
Every girl on the team added a different aspect to the game, which truly helped the team have a winning season, Skendzel said.
