Lemont finishes as IHSA Class 2A Girls Soccer State Runner-Up

Despite nine saves from senior goalkeeper Erin Stahurski, Lemont High Schools girls soccer team fell just short of winning the programs first state title, dropping a 3-0 decision to Wheaton Academy in the championship match of the 2009 IHSA Class 2A Girls
Soccer State Finals at North Central College in Naperville on Saturday afternoon.

Making their first championship game appearance, head coach Rick Prangens Indians played Wheaton Academy to a scoreless tie until just short of the middle of the first half. The Warriors Jenn Lee scored her first of two goals in the match - an unassisted tally - at the 19:22 mark to start the scoring.

In the second half, Wheaton Academy standout Leah Fortune tallied her team-best 29th goal of the year in the 51st minute, and Lee wrapped up the scoring with another score in the 57th minute.

Facing pressure all day, Stahurski made her final outing in goal one to remember. She made several difficult saves, including one diving to her left on a point-blank shot late in the first half that kept her team within a goal.

Lemont, which finished the season with a 21-6 record, was out-shot by a
15-7 count in the game. Senior Tammy Contorno had both of Lemonts shots on goal.

Wheaton Academy goalie Emily Mulder made two saves in the shutout. The Warriors won their second state title in girls soccer; they captured their first title - at the Class A level - in 2004.

Lemonts football team also posted a runner-up finish in state competition this year, falling to Sacred Heart-Griffin in the IHSA Class 6A Football Championship. Lemonts cheerleading squad won the schools first-ever team state title earlier this year, capturing the 2009 IHSA Medium Division State Championship.
